Intercom System Repairs: Why Your Old Door Entry System May Not Need Replacing

When an intercom or door entry system stops working, replacing the entire system isn’t always the answer.

With more than 20 years of experience working with intercom and door entry systems, BASTEK Services Ltd has worked on installations ranging from individual properties and small systems to large multi-apartment developments, social housing and council housing.

We understand modern intercom technology, but just as importantly, we still understand many of the older systems that are becoming increasingly difficult to find engineers willing or able to repair.

If your existing intercom system has developed a fault, don’t automatically assume it needs replacing. We can assess the existing installation and determine whether repair, partial upgrade, modernisation or complete replacement is the most appropriate solution.

Why Is It Becoming Harder to Find Intercom Repair Specialists?

Intercom technology has changed considerably over the years.

Many companies now specialise primarily in installing modern systems, including two-wire and IP-based intercom solutions. These systems can offer excellent functionality and, in certain installations, can allow existing cabling to be reused rather than completely rewiring a building.

However, when an older system develops a fault, replacing the entire installation isn’t always the best or most cost-effective solution.

Older analogue and conventional door entry systems can continue to provide reliable service when properly maintained and repaired. The challenge is finding engineers who have the experience and knowledge to understand how these systems work and, importantly, how to fault-find and repair them.

This is where our experience makes a difference.

We Repair Old and Existing Intercom Systems

Over more than two decades working with intercoms, we’ve encountered a wide variety of systems, manufacturers, technologies and installation methods.

That experience means we’re often able to work with systems that other companies may no longer support or are unwilling to repair.

Depending on the fault, repairs may involve diagnosing issues with:

  • Door entry handsets
  • External entrance panels
  • Internal call points
  • Power supplies
  • Door release mechanisms
  • Electric locks and locking hardware
  • Audio communication
  • Cabling and connections
  • Faulty components
  • System controllers
  • Call circuits
  • Individual apartments or properties
  • Communal entrances and doors

The important thing is that we don’t automatically assume the whole system needs replacing.

We’ll investigate the problem first.

Intercom faults aren’t always located at the entrance panel. Internal handsets, wiring, power supplies and door-release circuits can all require investigation.

From a Single Property to Large Multi-Apartment Systems

Our intercom and door entry experience covers a wide range of applications and property types.

We work with systems installed in:

  • Individual houses and residential properties
  • Blocks of flats
  • Multi-occupancy residential buildings
  • Social housing
  • Council housing
  • Schools and educational buildings
  • Property-managed developments
  • Communal entrances
  • Larger multi-door developments

A fault affecting one flat can sometimes be relatively straightforward to resolve.

A problem affecting an entire block, however, can be considerably more complicated. There may be multiple entrances, hundreds of apartments, communal door releases, several power supplies and extensive cabling involved.

Replacing an entire system can therefore become a major project, particularly in occupied buildings.

In many cases, repairing or upgrading part of the existing installation may be a much more practical option.

Your Existing Intercom Cabling May Still Be Useful

One of the major developments in modern intercom technology is the ability to use existing infrastructure in certain circumstances.

Modern two-wire intercom systems can potentially make use of existing cabling, while IP-based intercom systems can use network infrastructure to provide modern functionality and additional flexibility.

This means upgrading an older installation doesn’t necessarily mean starting from scratch.

Depending on the condition and configuration of the existing system, it may be possible to:

Repair → Upgrade → Reuse existing cabling where practical → Modernise the system

rather than completely replace everything.

However, every installation is different. The condition, type, configuration and suitability of the existing wiring and equipment need to be assessed before deciding what approach is appropriate.

Modern intercom and access-control systems can provide additional functionality while, depending on the existing installation, allowing elements of the original infrastructure to be retained.

Repair, Upgrade or Replace? We’ll Help You Decide

At BASTEK, we don’t believe that replacing an entire intercom system should automatically be the first option simply because a system is old.

Our approach is straightforward: understand the problem before recommending the solution.

If an existing intercom system can be economically repaired, we’ll look at repairing it.

If the system is still serviceable but certain components are becoming obsolete, a partial upgrade or modernisation may be possible.

If the existing system has reached the end of its practical life, we’ll explain the options for replacing it with a modern system.

This means you don’t necessarily have to replace a complete intercom installation simply because one part has failed.

For landlords, property managers, housing providers and councils, this approach can be particularly important. A sensible repair or phased upgrade can potentially reduce disruption to residents and avoid unnecessary replacement costs.

Why Experience Matters When Repairing Older Intercom Systems

Modern intercom systems can be highly capable, but older systems require a different type of knowledge and experience.

When a system has been installed for many years, documentation may be incomplete, components may have changed, and faults aren’t always immediately obvious.

Understanding how different generations of door entry systems operate can make the difference between simply replacing equipment and actually finding the fault and repairing the system.

With more than 20 years of experience in intercom and door entry systems, BASTEK has worked on installations ranging from straightforward residential systems to complex multi-occupancy developments.

We’re particularly interested in helping customers who have been told:

“That system is too old to repair.”

Sometimes it is.

But sometimes it isn’t.
